Now it’s confirmed – Attachmate really did axe Mono
A rumour that Attachmate fired the Mono team has circulated around the net the last two weeks, but there has been some uncertainty as Miguel de Icaza’s blog remained silent on the subject. To add to the confusion, a few tweets here and there from Miguel and others, suggested that things weren’t as bad as they were rumoured to be. Alas, things are just that bad, as was to be expected. Miguel wrote about it in his blog yesterday.
As you can see in his post, all hope is not lost yet, as the newly founded company Xamarin will continue Mono development.
While Mono didn’t have much to offer for cutting edge, cross platform client applications, due to the lack of WPF support, it looked like a promising way of running F# on a Linux server. I had plans of doing that that myself, but while there may be a chance that Xamarin succeeds, and let’s hope they do, starting an F# project targeting Mono doesn’t seem the least bit sane at this time.
If this bad news causes upset stomachs among those unfortunate enough to have applications depending on Mono, like the Ubuntu folks who have about 40 of them, I recommend Samarin. Yes, that was a cheap one, but I do wonder where they got the name Xamarin from…
